Ten Tracks by the Clash

The album that changed me the most is the US version of the Clash's debut. In terms of punk, most people are quick to talk about just how amazing the Sex Pistols were and how much Never Mind the Bollocks....is an important record. While I agree it is a significant album, to me the Sex Pistols were more about aesthetics while the Clash's career, which has many albums and not one, has more weight. The Clash encompass an experimentation in music. It was just punk, but it was ska, reggae and dub too. I think I am more content with the Clash because their is a whole lot more to their catalog. The Pistols had their moment. And in some ways, they were more of a cultural phenom then technical musicians. The Sex Pistols live in the myth of Sid and Nancy. And the Clash is a reflection of the times in England. The racism, the lack of jobs, the living in run down houses. The Clash will always be the most important band to me. I may love Depeche Mode more in different ways, but I never forget how the Clash altered my being.

You should watch the Clash documentary Westway to the World. I think you might like it.

I have been a bit under the weather. And thus gotten behind in my music posting. School started back up and now I am totally sick. I am putting off my homework and I can't pay attention to my Af Am reading.

So, I give you Depeche Mode. I have a deep, deep love for Depeche Mode. I think they are the one band I am truly in love with. Dave Gahan is a fox. And I would do a thousand horrible things if it meant I could see them perform live. It was a tough call making a list of ten tracks. So I may put more up later on. But for now, for now, this is excellent.

I adore She Wants Revenge. I am enamored. I think they are a wonderfully sexy duo who's music can make any dame feel vampish. But I think fellas can dig them as well.

The lyrics are racy, and the music itself it's artistic synth that is flat but still emotive. Plus the cover of their self titled debut is smokin'.

The back cover is nifty too. Except the fact the John Tucker Must Die poster rips it off.

What is crazy is the bad got Joaquin Phoenix to direct their first video for the song, Tear You Apart.

I love Oasis. As a kid I was told by my father I should hate them because they were a Beatles knockoff. Clearly, my father was very misinformed. Yes, there are Beatles elements but fuck you, I like Oasis, they produce complete and solid albums. I suppose I am to say that What's The Story Morning Glory? is my favorite Oasis album. The truth is, it isn't.

Sure it's good. But I hate it because everyone picks it for the same goddamn reasons. It contains both Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova. Both are songs of our generation and whatnot. But they don't do it for me anymore. My favorite Oasis album happens to be Be Here Now. Which came after Morning Glory and I really don't even know if people even like Be Here Now. But that is kinda how I figure out if people have explored their catalog.

From Be Here Now. This is my song. I love this song. So much. I love how it takes more than a minute to get going. And you hear planes in the distance. I love how it ends all, uhm jagged I suppose. It's some of the best seven minutes of music ever. I can't imagine a song better to begin Be Here Now.

From Be Here Now. Fun fact, Johnny Depp plays guitar on this song. It's not the only reason why I picked it. But it's something I like to often share.

From Don't Believe the Truth. Off of one of their most recent discs. And Oasis still does not suck and Lyla is proof of this. The opening is like, really happy clappy I suppose. I always hope to be a Lyla.

Seven for Sunday; Massive Attack Amazingness.

I love Massive Attack. I get emotionally drunk off of them. I did the research once, but now the information escapes me, on England and triphop. Apparently, most of the music and the acts came of the Bristol area. And thinking back, I think the movement is briefly touched in the film 24 Hour Party People. See that film, Steve Coogan is wonderful. And what is interesting, is the people sitting in the room for the Sex Pistols first gigs, and who went on to start a band. Nearly everyone there did. But that is just a tangent.

Back to Massive Attack. Smooth and slow production. It just simmers. I rarely put their albums on shuffle because it seems to totally alter the whole thing if taken out of order.

I think my choices were off Mezzanine or 100th Window.

One time, I listened to this song on repeat 12 times. Itunes counted it for me. it starts really quiet and slow, you might think it's not playing. I recommend turning up the bass for this one. And it's a man singing, but the voice is so asexual, it's why I like it.

Better late than never or something. I present to you seven tracks from Lady Sovereign. I may be a bit obsessed with her. But fuck it. I love her beats and her rhymes make me laugh. She takes a bit getting used to since she raps fast and is English. And I enjoy the fact she is normal and isn't like other female "rappers" who talk about Louis Vuitton this and how many guys they have fucked. Currently, Sov is one of few positive females in hip hop.

Some people just don't like Kanye. Which I can understand at times because sometimes hip hop doesn't do it for people. Or they don't think Kanye qualifies as hip hop, because he is first a producer.

Now, there people need to remember that this is what Puff Daddy did. Like before numerous name changes. And I think Kanye is certainly much better than Puff. At least Kanye did not fuck Led Zep into the ground.
